Peter Martin Weiss - Bassist

Peter began studying the guitar and the string bass as a teenager, and attended Berklee School of Music as a guitarist. He received his Bachelors degree from SUNY Oneonta, and a Masters degree from Manhattan School of Music, studying the bass with Harvie S
. Peter also spent six years studying with Homer Mensch, former principal bassist of the NY Philharmonic. As a freelance musician in NYC Peter played with the Bronx Symphony, the Greenwich Village Symphony, Ain’t Misbehavin’, and Phantom of the Opera, as well as many jazz groups. He also taught for five years at the State University of NY at New Paltz on the jazz faculty, and in fact he started the bass program there.

In 1986 Peter went on the road with the Etta Jones/Houston Person Quintet. The group was like a family, performing at international jazz festivals and concerts;the music was swinging and passionate. Peter stayed with Etta and Houston for more than a decade, traveling world wide and recording on over 30 CDs, including his own, Bass Hits, on the Savant record label. His 25 years of performance credits include playing with Nat Adderly, Ray Bryant, Winard Harper, Michael Carvin, Claudio Roditi, Donald Harrison, Hank Crawford, Richard Wyands, and Gloria Lynn. He was often in the recording studio with world class artists including, Frank Wess, Grady Tate, Kenny Washington, Melvin Sparks, Lorez Alexandria, and Della Griffin.

Peter met pianist Jane Hastay in San Francisco while on tour and soon after they were married. After a decade in New York together, they moved to East Hampton. Peter currently teaches private guitar and bass lessons, sings with the Choral Society of the Hamptons and performs locally on bass and nylon string guitar.

The couple produced a CD entitled NeverNeverLand, named after a song that encourages us to follow our dreams. This recording represents the turning of a wonderful page on a journey to Never Never Land.

Jane Hastay - Pianist

After graduating from Mills College in Oakland, CA, where she won the Flora Boyd Memorial award for piano performance, native Minnesotan Jane Hastay became a regular on the San Francisco music scene. She toured with theater groups, played in jazz groups, accompanied vocalists, worked on cruise ships, and had a long standing engagement leading her own trio at the Fairmont Hotel. Jane was performing with San Francisco vocalist Denise Perrier one night when jazz legend Etta Jones came to the club with her bassist, Peter Martin Weiss. A long conversation in an all night din
er blossomed into letters and long distance phone calls. Six months later they were married and Jane moved to New York. In 1996 she received her Master’s Degree in Jazz Piano Performance from Manhattan School of Music.

While living in New York Jane performed at the Blue Note, The Lennox Lounge, The Five Spot, DeFemios and the New Haven and Newark Jazz Festivals. She toured Japan with the Kit McClure Big Band, an all woman band, and she also played with Etta Jones, the Michael Carvin Quartet, Frank Wess, Houston Person, and Della Griffin. She produced an International Women in Jazz-sponsored concert at Saint Peter’s Church, featuring Etta Jones.

Jane was a Yamaha music teacher for ten years, and is also certified in the Kodaly and Dalcroze music education methods. Her teaching credits include choral conducting and musical direction. She has been a choral conductor at The Ross School in East Hampton, and Fontbonne Hall Academy high school in Brooklyn. She is in demand as a private piano and vocal coach, and enjoys teaching group vocal workshops with Peter.

Jane is currently the organist at St. Therese of Lisieux church in Montauk. In addition to her freelance work as a pianist/vocalist she also works as a musical director for local theater productions and sings with the Choral Society of the Hamptons.
